Outdoor Fireplaces and Chimineas

Outdoor fireplaces and chimineas can be popular additions to your backyard living space but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, these are essentially campfires and subject to the same local rules around backyard burning (so check with your municipality or regional district). Second, as enjoyable as they are, they may be creating a nuisance and health concern for you and your neighbours, especially people with heart or lung problems.

These outdoor appliances do not have adequate chimney systems to vent the smoke into the air, so everyone breathes in more unhealthy smoke. If these types of appliances are allowed in your community, be considerate of your neighbours and their ability to enjoy their outdoor environment.

Never burn leaves, treated wood, or garbage. Use small-diameter pieces of seasoned wood, which has been split and dried for at least six months. Keep in mind that small, hot fires emit less smoke than smoldering fires. For more tips on safe and efficient wood burning, see Wood burning and your health (Canadian Lung Association).
