The newly introduced Youth
Climate Leadership Alliance is a program to encourage youth to take action on climate initiatives, to increase British Columbians’ awareness and understanding of
the importance of climate action activities, and to provide youth with opportunities and experience to pursue a career in the public service.
In the summer of 2008, the majority of Alliance members worked as Idle-Free Ambassadors, promoting idle reduction through outreach campaigns in a provincewide public-awareness campaign aimed at getting drivers to change their habits and thus decrease the amount of time engines run idle in BC. The Ambassadors were stationed in Courtenay, Penticton, Cranbrook, Squamish, Vancouver, Quesnel, Grand Forks, Prince George and Smithers.
B.C.'s 2008 Idle-Free AmbassadorsWith support from the Ministry of Environment headquarters in Victoria and local government sponsors, the Ambassadors provided education and outreach to the public at a variety of interesting venues. From local farmers’ markets and car shows to the Pemberton Music Festival, the 10 Ambassadors made their presence known across the Province.
In addition to public outreach and education, they conducted idling-awareness surveys, worked with municipalities on the development of anti-idling bylaws, and helped support local businesses that wanted to create anti-idling fleet policies.
