Environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Urban and Rural Land Development in British Columbia: Air Quality BMPs and Supporting
Information
February 2006
A growing body of research indicates that people living near major freeways and roadways have a higher risk of developing or worsening health problems
such as asthma, emphysema, pneumonia and heart disease. This report provides the technical rationale for recommendations on building placement (e.g. setbacks) and general land use — to
reduce exposures and health risks associated with traffic proximity. The final recommendations are summarized in Develop
with Care: Environmental Guidelines for Urban and Rural Land Development in British Columbia (Ministry of Environment).
